Overview
In ancient times when medical technology was underdeveloped, the idea of using beeswax to treat diseases was a remarkable innovation. Together with acupuncture and massage, it formed the main framework of traditional Chinese physical therapy. While acupuncture and massage developed on a broader foundation, wax therapy was limited by the technology and resources (beeswax) of the time, making it difficult to treat various diseases, but this did not diminish its efficacy. Traditional wax therapy is highly effective in treating low back and leg pain caused by arthritis, rheumatism, and rheumatoid arthritis, with short treatment times, quick results, and long-lasting effects. More importantly, it uses external application, making it a nearly natural therapy favored by patients.
Effects of Wax Therapy
Medical paraffin is made by adding mineral oil to paraffin in a ratio of 6:1 or 7:1.
It is a white, semi-transparent solid at room temperature, insoluble in water, with a melting point
of 50°C to 60°C. Paraffin has the physical properties of high heat capacity and low thermal conductivity. Therefore, it absorbs a large amount of heat during melting and releases it very slowly. At the same time, paraffin has good ductility, plasticity, and viscosity.
1. Thermal Effect
Wax therapy has a deep thermal effect, reaching 0.2-1 cm under the skin, with local skin temperature increasing by 8-18°C. Moreover, wax therapy has a strong and lasting thermal effect, allowing the local skin to tolerate higher temperatures (55-65°C), dilating local blood vessels, and promoting improved local blood circulation.
2. Mechanical Compression
Paraffin has good plasticity and viscosity. During treatment, it closely contacts the skin, and as the wax temperature gradually cools, the volume of paraffin shrinks, applying pressure to the skin and subcutaneous tissues.
3. Lubricating Effect
Since wax contains oily substances, it has a lubricating effect on the skin, making it soft and elastic. It softens and loosens scar tissue and tendon contractures. Wax therapy improves skin nutrition, accelerates epithelial growth, promotes regeneration, and facilitates the formation of callus.
Methods of Wax Therapy
1. Chinese Herbal Wax Mud Method
Chinese herbal wax therapy combines Chinese herbs and wax to enhance the dual effects of both, effectively eliminating pain factors, reducing inflammation, and slowing joint aging. Melted paraffin at around 60°C is poured into a tray to half full, and Chinese herbal powder is slowly stirred in, with the amount of powder being one-third of the tray's volume. When the wax mud temperature drops to 45-50°C, it is directly applied to the affected area with a thickness of 1-1.5 cm and kept warm for 30-40 minutes.
2. Wax Immersion Method
When the melted wax cools to 55-60°C, the hand or foot is immersed in the wax and quickly withdrawn, forming a thin layer of wax film on the skin surface. This is repeated several times until the wax film reaches 0.5-1.0 cm thick, resembling a glove or sock. Then, the limb is immersed in the wax for about 10 minutes. The wax film is then removed. This is done once daily, with 20-30 sessions as one course, which can be extended. This method is not suitable for patients prone to edema.
3. Wax Brushing Method
A flat brush is dipped in paraffin heated to around 50°C and quickly and evenly brushed repeatedly on the treatment area. A writing brush is used to evenly apply the wax liquid to the affected area, allowing it to cool and form a thin wax film on the skin surface. This is repeated until the wax film is 0.5-1.0 cm thick. Then, a wax cake is placed on top, or the wax film is brushed to 0.5-1.0 cm thick and covered with plastic wrap and cotton padding for insulation. Each treatment lasts 30-40 minutes, once daily, with 15-20 sessions as one course.
4. Wax Cake Method
Melted paraffin is poured into a prepared tray to a thickness of 1.5-2 cm. Once it forms a cake, it is removed and placed on plastic wrap to be applied to the treatment area. When it cools to initial solidification (surface temperature 45-50°C), a small spatula is used to take out the wax cake and apply it to the affected area. It is then wrapped in plastic wrap and cotton padding for insulation for 30-60 minutes, once daily, with 20-30 sessions as one course.
Clinical Applications
Lumbar muscle strain, acute lumbar muscle injury, cervical spondylosis, frozen shoulder, lumbar disc herniation, knee arthritis, rheumatic and rheumatoid arthritis, and other neck, shoulder, low back, and leg pain conditions. It relaxes local muscles, dilates capillaries, accelerates metabolism, improves local congestion and edema, thereby reducing pressure and irritation on nerve roots, alleviating swelling, and eliminating pain.
Application of wax therapy in scar adhesion: Promotes epithelial tissue growth, softens scar tissue, and restores skin elasticity.
Causes of Burns
(1) Water in the paraffin, or water in the wax pot, or water droplets from condensed steam in the pot dripping into the wax. Since water has a higher heat capacity and specific heat than wax, and conducts heat faster, it absorbs more heat during heating and quickly transfers it to the skin, causing burns.
(2) Inaccurate operation during wax therapy, such as uneven application when using the brushing method, or squeezing the wax cake during the wax cake method, causing uncooled wax inside to flow out and cause burns.
(3) During wax immersion, the immersion area exceeds the previous edge too much.
Cleaning of Paraffin
After some use, paraffin becomes contaminated with impurities like hair and skin debris. Depending on usage, add 10% to 20% of new wax periodically. Additionally, clean the wax regularly by melting it and adding hot water equivalent to one-third or half of the wax volume. Stir and mix, then let it stand. The paraffin will float, and water and impurities will sink. Remove the paraffin to eliminate bottom impurities, or drain the water and impurities from the bottom of the wax tank to ensure the paraffin remains clean and pure. Generally, after four uses, scrape off the old medication after cooling, remelt, and add new medication. Add medication slowly to prevent the paraffin from boiling over and spilling.
